This workshop will be based on the very popular Five Minutes to Funny stand-up comedy class that Chris has been teaching (and selling out) for the last two years at the Improv in DC.

Your Teachers:

Chris started teaching comedy at the Improv in Washington, DC in 2009. The class was so popular that he agreed to do another, then another. Now two years later he enjoys sold-out classes and a waiting list of prospective students.

Laurie Forster is a graduate of Chris's classes and a celebrity in her own right; Known as The Wine Coach she tours as a national speaker and wine lecturer. She also hosts a weekly radio show called The Sipping Point heard each Saturday where she explores the recipe for a delicious life.

The Philosophy of the class

We don’t believe you can “teach” someone to be a stand-up comedian, what you can do is encourage their creativity and give them tools and techniques that will help them develop their comedic ability. We believe in letting a performer’s style and material develop from within themselves. We will not be writing an act for you; instead we (you, the class and teachers) will be coaxing an act out of you. We will help you develop ideas (premises) and will offer tips, tricks and tweaks that can help shape those ideas into crisp and funny bits. We may even throw out a joke or premise suggestion but ultimately you will be in control of what becomes your act.

The Reality of the Class

Over the course of four weeks the students will develop material for a 3-5 minute stand-up set. This will be done in a collaborative setting with the instructor and up to 12 students. Each student will perform their material, immediately followed by notes and critique from the instructors. The discussion will then be opened up to the group for suggestions and feedback. Each student will be expected to perform and participate in the roundtable. This routine will be followed each week with the goal of honing the student’s material and creating a strong, funny, 3-5 minute routine.
