Stretching the "grass" concept to the limit and offering a unique sound in the process, the Annapolis/Baltimore based Electric Newgrass band, Swamp Donkey delivers an exciting combination of original songs and unique covers that span many genres in a style they have made all their own.
At the core of the band are 4 musicians with very different musical backgrounds. Founding member Greg DeHaas, on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, and Will Crowther on lead Guitar, combine their influences from the likes of Jerry Garcia, David Gilmore, Trey Anastasio, and Vince Gill to drive the unique mix of “grass” and improvisational rock music. Will’s exceptional ability to navigate his way through constant tempo and style changes is truly one of the things that define Swamp Donkey. With more than 25 years in the business, co-founding member, bassist Greg Nelson is the backbone to the high energy delivery that is a typical Swamp Donkey song. His fusion of Classic Rock, Metal, and his newfound “grass” style of playing the electric bass, is the proverbial “kick you in the face” experience that is a Swamp Donkey show. Drums rarely find their way into anything “grassy” but Swamp Donkeys drummer, Trevor Best, brings a “dangerous” and “heavier” edge to the Newgrass sound. As a song writer and a drummer, Trevor’s philosophy to percussion is to always put the song first. Filling out the fifth spot, the band always features special guests to round out the “grass” sound they aim to deliver. Jon Brady on the keyboard, who is heavily influenced by improvisational and rock genres, brings a funky, electric element that fits right in with Swamp Donkey. He is band and fan favorite!
Swamp Donkey prides themselves on a big sound that you will likely not hear anywhere else! The band takes an intense and creative approach to their live performance that is riddled with surprises, mesh-ups, and lots of energy! Fans are sure to experience a “swamped-up” version of something that will keep them stomping their feet.
